Lucy Addison High School's History:
     Miss Lucy Addison was appointed principal in 1917 of Harrison Elementary school which was built in 1916. An educational innovator, Miss Addison developed a curriculum for high school students. In 1924, the first three students graduated from Harrison High School and in 1927 Miss Addison retired.
     The original Lucy Addison High School structure was built in 1928. The school was located at the corner of Douglas and Hart Avenues. It was named Lucy Addison High School in 1928 after Roanoke's pioneer educator, Miss Lucy Addison. The first class graduated in 1929.
     Seven principals served in the original building from 1928 to 1952. They were T. R. Parker -1928-1934, Arnett G. Macklin-1935-1939, S.F. Scott-1939-1945, Sadie V. Lawson-1945-1946, Henry Carpenter-1946-1948, Lewis A. Sydnor-1948-1949 and Sadie V. Lawson-1949-1952.
     The second Lucy Addison High School structure was built in 1952. It was located at the corner of Fifth Street and Orange Avenue. The first class graduated in 1953. Edwin L Phillips was principal 1952-1968. Julian A. Moore served as principal 1968-1970 and Charles W. Day served as principal 1970-1973. The last graduating high school class was in 1973. The school was closed in 1973 to accommodate desegregation.
